Position Overview:
The CMA promotes and ensures the smooth day to day operation of the Internal Medicine/Pediatric or Dermatology Departments by assisting the nursing staff and physician with patient care. Overseeing the patient flow and ensuring quality patient care is being provided are the CMA’s highest priorities. Additionally, the CMA must be aware of the physician schedules for that POD and proactively anticipate need.  The CMA must take initiative and room patients without being asked and must be reliable and self-sufficient to some degree. The CMA must also be able to increase his/her pace to adjust to the demands of the daily doctor/patient schedules.  It will be important for the CMA to “set the stage’ for quality reporting by keeping a “critical eye” on and checking for any gaps in patient care and conducting screenings and recording the results of these screenings according to structured guidelines and proper channels.
 
Position Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Clerical:
    • Organize and distribute paper faxes to appropriate location.
    • Fax various forms and/or documents.
  • Room and Patient Preparation:
    • Escort patients to and from exam rooms as appropriate.
    • Room patients documenting vital signs, review current medications, and other items accurately in the patients’ electronic chart.
    • Prepares exam room with needed equipment for the various exams including cleaning of exam room and equipment on daily/weekly basis.
  • Patient Care:
    • Assists the physician with any procedures, while maintaining the comfort, privacy, confidentiality, and well-being of the patient.
    • Administers medications and injection as directed by a physician or nurse. 
    • Documents the medication, dose, manufacturer, lot number, and expiration date in the patient’s chart following clinic policy.
    • Applies orthopedic devices as directed by physician or nurse.
    • Assists the physician with exams, medical procedures, and treatments, including:
      • Pelvic/PAP smears
      • Minor surgical procedures (i.e. excisions, incisions, wound drainage)
      • Biopsies
      • KOH and wet mounts
      • Phlebotomy as requested by physician/RN.
  • Departmental responsibilities:
    • Ability to prioritize and multi-task including assisting other staff, if needed.
    • Attends and participates in departmental meetings and committees.
    • Maintains immediate work area in a neat and organized manner
    • Orders supplies for self and for area. Helps in keeping adequate stock of medical supplies.
    • Clean and stocks exam rooms daily.
    • Keep prescription samples neat and orderly.
    • Provide coverage in other areas of the department as needed and directed by nurse manager/RN team leads.
    • Other duties as assigned by clinic nurse manager or RN team leads.
 
Position Qualifications:
  • 1-3 years of Medical Assisting within a clinic or hospital setting
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification, preferable AAMA credentialed
  • Current CPR card
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Strong communication, organization, time management, and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to follow directions and standards with regards to providing quality patient care.
