Located in SW Portland, Barbur World Foods has been serving customers since 2004. We provide our customers with both fresh produce, curated beer & wine selection, local meat & seafood, traditional Lebanese cuisine, international groceries and local culinary favorites from the Pacific North West.

  • You have at least three year of experience managing employees. You listen to and direct employees in a manner that supports clarity of purpose, demonstrates integrity, and fosters a healthy work environment. 
  • You have at least one year experience managing managers.  You listen to and empower your managers to do what’s right, to take appropriate action when needed, and to collectively advocate for the success and wellbeing of the store.
  • You have at least one year of experience managing a budget. You assess expenditures, implement logical cost savings measures, allocate funds in a manner that supports short and long-term sustainability and operational excellence. 
  • You have at least one year of experience in a higher-level management role.  You are accountable for the decisions made and the related outcomes.  You come up with and communicate creative and feasible ways to overcome challenges and have the emotional resilience needed to manage change.
  • Masterful Vendor Relationship Manager: You know what it takes to foster beneficial vendor relationships and when it’s time to terminate an existing relationship.
  • Solid Industry Experience:  From managing inventory to working with employees to improve performance, you understand what it takes to establish and maintain a large grocery store in today’s competitive market. 
  • Solid Professional Experience:  While we understand that the amount of time spent in a similar role may not be a perfect indicator of ability, we require that all applicants have a minimum of five years’ experience. 
  • Strong Computer Skills: You learn new software quickly and are able to apply that knowledge in a way that supports business needs.
  • Strong Leadership Abilities:  You flawlessly adapt your written and verbal communication to best fit the needs of your audience and engender team cohesion.  
  • Detail-Oriented Strategist: You’re able to focus on the minutiae while still keeping a strategic mindset. 
  • Operationally Savvy:  You know what needs to be done to improve sales, reducing shrink, and supporting strong employee engagement. 
  • Multi-Tasker:  You are prepared and able to handle multiple requests, questions, and concerns simultaneously and you naturally prioritize which item needs to be resolved first.
  • Strong People Skills:  You absorb and process what you hear and see quickly and communicate relevant information in a manner that is readily understood by the intended audience.
  • Change Management Genius: Though you’re able to see the quickest way to solve a problem, you also understand that change takes time and you exhibit an appropriate level of patience when making change.
  • Linguistic Abilities:  You’re able to write, read, speak, and understand English.
  • Travel Ready:  You have consistent access to a reliable vehicle and a valid driver’s license. May also be required to go to relevant trade shows on an infrequent basis.  
As the General Manager, you will be responsible for everything that happens in the store. With that in mind, we’ve provided a non-exhaustive list of key responsibilities:  
  • Model strong customer service and provide on-the-spot training for employees whose skills could use a refresher.
  • Provide supervision, support, and direction in such a way that engenders clear understanding, increases self-efficacy, and follows all policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Effectively work with the President/CEO and Director of Operations to improve the store’s financial sustainability and growth.
  • Ensure all departments are adhering to department and store budget.
  • Oversee or directly manage all financial transactions including vendor payments and negotiations.
